Artists of Gateway Gallery
at The Enrichment Center
Unique Bone-ique, The Gateway Gal
A collaborative piece by artists at the Enrichment Center, this Gateway Gal looks like a Dalmatian, but each spot is unique, painted by a different artist in the program to showcase the variety of talent that exists at the Enrichment Center. Expressing themselves through art changes these artists’ lives, teaching them to communicate in ways they never before imagined. Their artwork also allows them an avenue into the community, not as “artists with disabilities,” but as creative, talented people. Their work is shown in many exhibitions, and is on display and for sale at the
Gateway Gallery. This is the Gateway Gallery’s second time as Art Unleashed! artists (thanks, everyone!). http://www.enrichmentcenter.org

Todd Belcher
Chili Dog
Wow! That’s one hot dog! Decorated with painted chilies against a hot red background, sporting a collar of plastic chilies, Todd’s pup is perfect for a city that is home to Texas Pete Hot Sauce, and that includes many Latin Americans and their spicy, delicious dishes. A full-time artist who paints portraits of cats, dogs, and the people who love them, Todd is a former art teacher who was already an established artist when he found his true passion after painting a portrait of Jimmy, his beloved pet, for the Jimmydog Design Group logo. His pet portraits have been featured in national publications, as well as in many Southeastern galleries and exhibitions. He lives in Winston-Salem with his wife Stephanie, and their two dogs, Freddie and Joey. Todd is a returning Art Unleashed! artist (thanks, pal).

Sarah C. Bradley
K-9ite Fever!—The Disco Dawg
Winston-Salem artist Sarah Bradley loves dogs and loves to party, so it makes sense that she would create a real party animal. Dressed in a ’70s leisure suit, glammin’ with a gold necklace and circled by silver glitter paw prints, this pup is ready for a night on the town. Sarah says that this dog represents how Downtown Winston-Salem is “stayin’ alive” and that the Boogie is Back in the Twin City! www.sarahcatherinedesigns.com

Rachel Bridge
Kiddy Cat
This is a true KIDDY cat, its beautiful blue background decorated with boys and girls playing, swinging, running, sliding, and just being kids. Winston-Salem artist Rachel Bridge says that this design really shows the diversity and fun in our community. Rachel is a student at Mt. Tabor High School. Teachers: Alice Morley and Mike Spangler.
|
 |
Ralph Calhoun
Friends
Ralph is a Winston-Salem artist who says not to worry about these little mice; the cat and the mice are friends! Winston-Salem, he says, promotes unity and friendship among diverse cultures, and sure enough: the cat and mice—usually enemies—get along very well, thank you...Something the Forsyth Humane Society much approves! Ralph has seen many public art exhibits in other cities, and is delighted to be representing the Humane Society and the Twin City in Art Unleashed! 2008.

Vincent Cannino
Ruff in the Diamond
Vince has come up with a great form and a funny play on words. His pup, Ruff, is definitely at home on “the diamond,” since he’s a Winston-Salem Warthogs Baseball Player! A Brooklyn-born father of five, Vince is an aspiring children’s book illustrator, and creator of “Lois and Clark” for the Winston-Salem Children’s Museum and “Herr Kater’s Klub” for the Old Salem Children’s Museum. He won a Gold Addy as illustrator for the Old Salem Moravian Cookies collectible tins and was the set designer for “Beauty and the Beast” children’s opera for the North Carolina School of the Arts’ Giannini Society. His family adopted two FHS animal—their cat, Thomas, and dog, Bingo. Vince is a returning Art Unleashed! artist (thanks, pal).

Dorothy Cattle
Carolina Blues Cat
There’s no doubt that this is one “cool cat.” Winston-Salem artist Dorothy Cattle says her design celebrates our community’s exciting variety of music, especially blues and jazz. North Carolina and the Piedmont have recognized styles in the blues tradition, a fact underscored by this kitty’s beautiful blues. Dorothy’s a member of Associated Artists, and a proud cat owner. In fact, she says, her two cats approved this hip design for Art Unleashed! Meow… We mean…thanks!

Monica Cecil
Monica Cecil’s love of art has led her across the globe—from North Carolina to New York, London, Paris and Milan to Hong Kong and Bombay—and through a 20+ year fashion career. A native of Midway with a degree in fashion illustration, Monica returned to her roots eight years ago and now has an independent art business that includes commissioned portraits and paintings, as well as fashion accessories for the home. She shares her home with her two pugs, Rosie and Jack. Somehow, she’s found time to do three forms, two cats and a very special dog, for Art Unleashed! Monica is a returning Art Unleashed! artist (thanks, pal), and has created more designs than any other artist.
Deacon Dog - There’s no doubt which team THIS Deacon Dog represents! Decked out in Wake Forest’s colors, DEAC sports a Deacon top hat and a black and gold collar. DEAC is dedicated to the memory of Coach Skip Prosser, who was not only a wonderful coach but an amazing man and a strong supporter of the Forsyth Humane Society. DEAC’s base is signed by Coach Dino Gaudier and the entire WFU basketball team.
Patches - This beautiful cat is a tribute to the tradition and heritage of southern quilts and quilters. Geometric, floral and other quilt-like patches are painted all over Patches’ body, and we think she looks downright cozy. Southern quilting is an old tradition, representing bonds between family members, often telling a story or commemorating a special event. Patches is special, indeed.
Living in a Fish Bowl - This swirling, impressionist cat must represent every cat’s dream … to be actually covered in floating fishes instead of having to watch from the outside of a fishbowl. Brilliant orange koi spin and swim in vivid blue water in this stunning, dreamy piece of art that would look beautiful in a garden or inside a house. This beautiful feline is the official cat “ambassador” for Art Unleashed!

Rebecca Dresser
Dogwood
Hailing from Westfield, North Carolina, artist Rebecca Dresser loves the dogwood, our state flower. She says the base color of her pup will be “the color of an October sky in North Carolina, one of the most beautiful blues I have ever seen.” The dogwood blossoms depict springtime in North Carolina, her other favorite season. We agree! She also, obviously, loves animals. Her daughter, an artist like her mom, has a cat whom she adopted from FHS, and Rebecca and her husband have three rescue pups.

Lisa Reavis Drum
Puppy Pixelation
Yadkinville resident Lisa Drum says that Art Unleashed! is very meaningful to her, because of her love of art and her “extreme love” of dogs. Her checkerboard design is done in the colors of the spectrum of the rainbow, which she says is representative of hope. Given that Winston-Salem had the first Arts Council in the United States, Lisa is proud to support the Forsyth Humane Society in that same community. Art and animals… a match made in heaven!

Carol Eickmeyer
Artist Carol Eickmeyer needs little introduction to the Triad, where she has been an active artist, educator and community advocate. She created the colorful logo for Art Unleashed! and she designed Artie and Belle, the kitty and canine prototype ambassadors for Art Unleashed! 2006. She received a BA in Art and Theology from Hanover College and an MA in Educational Administration and Business Management from Ball State University. She works in paint—on floors, furniture and walls—and in mosaic. She designs and paints murals for private commissions, and works with numerous groups on community art projects. Thanks, Carol, for your continued support!
Dogma - Dogma’s collar is covered with scrabble tiles and letter beads, and the beautiful watercolors on the body are decorated with memorable quotes that remind us of how important dogs are in our lives. Carol, obviously, is a returning Art Unleashed! artist (thanks, pal).
Recycled Friend - This pup isn’t just gorgeous, but has an important message. With a collar made of bottle caps and covered in tumbled recycled glass in shades of brown, blue, green and clear, he shows us that things too often thrown away can be recycled and used. This dog, Carol says, is very much about the mission of the Forsyth Humane Society, which cares for and finds new homes for “thrown away” pets.

Karen Newman Fridy
Lucy Loves the Bow-House
Clever, Karen! This dog is an homage to the Bauhaus school of art, and is painted with the classic Bauhaus colors of blue, red and yellow. Karen’s piece was inspired by her real pup, Lucy, who was adopted from FHS. Karen is a commercial interior designer with a “parallel life” as an artist who creates fiber art, painted murals, and handcrafted ornaments. She lives with her husband Jim, two sons John and Will, and their two dogs, Lucy and Max, their adopted Lab-Border Collie mix. Karen is a returning Art Unleashed! artist (thanks, pal).

 |
|
Brianna Germond
Sunny Pooch
A student at Mt. Tabor High School, Brianna designed her dazzling pup in honor of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers.” We know he’d be honored! Sunflowers of varied sizes shine against a sky blue background. And there’s a very Van Gogh-esque vase of sunflowers painted on his back. Teachers: Alice Morley and Mike Spangler.
|
|
Mark Graves
Dog-Tired Gear Hound
Kernersville artist Mark Graves says that dogs and bicycles have a long interactive history, with cyclists and their dogs enjoying the outdoors together. He hopes that his pup will promote awareness of cycling and recycling in our community. His brilliantly textural design is covered with actual tires, tubes, small gears and recycled rubber! We’re delighted that both Mark and his artist wife (see the next design) have contributed to Art Unleashed!

|
Toni Graves
Moondoggie
Surf’s up! Moondoggie sports his Hawaiian shirt, surfer’s cross collar, and surfboard as he sits on the beach, waiting for the perfect wave. He’s a faithful doggie, staring out at the sea, illuminated by the light of the moon. Toni says that North Carolina has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, enjoyed by many people and their pets. Sounds perfect to us.

|
Christine Hancock
Hot Dog
Wow! This dog’s on fire! Enveloped in fiery swirls of black and orange, complete with wisps of flames shooting from his ears and tail, this pup is truly a Hot Dog. Artist Christine Hancock says that she’s lived many places in the U.S., and that after calling Arizona, Louisiana, Georgia and now North Carolina home, she’s been known to apply a liberal dose of hot sauce to just about everything. Christine is a 2007 graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design and is now a Graphic Designer at Wildfire in downtown Winston-Salem. Though she’s self-proclaimed crazy cat lady, she’s delighted to be working on this pup.

 |
|
Emma Hancock
Kandinsky
A student at Mt. Tabor, Emma has designed a cat influenced by, and named for, the abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky. Florescent colors, striking black lines, and geometric detail make this cat really stand out! Emma says that the colors and designs all come together in unity on this kitty, just like the Humane Society helps dogs and cats alike. Teachers: Alice Morley and Mike Spangler.
|
 |
|
Christy Hudson
Groucho Barx
Christy is an artist from King, NC, who feels that laughter is truly the best medicine. She took her inspiration from a comment by Groucho Marx: “A clown is like an aspirin, only he works twice as fast.” No one looking at Christy’s Groucho Barx can keep “grouchy” for long; dressed up in full tails and a tie, and Groucho’s trademark mustache, glasses and cigar, he’s sure to bring a smile.

Suzanne Lyons
Winston
Starry, starry night dramatically painted black with bright yellow stars, accented by teal toenails and collar, Winston features a painted skyline of Winston-Salem on his (or is it her?) back. Suzanne, a Clemmons artist, says that the stars represent animals from the Humane Society that have been adopted and have become “stars” to their new families. Awww.
|
|
|
Sophie Capshaw Macks
Bebe
Covered with markings from leopards, lions, tigers and cheetahs, “Bebe” is everything…and more… that a CAT would be. Surprise! She’s a dog. Young artist Sophie named her creation in memory of, and dedicated to, her beagle pet who died not long ago. Sophie is a student at Wiley Middle School.

|
Judith F. Margerum
Bastet—Egyptian Goddess of Sunrise and Protector of Cats, Women and Children
Bastet, a black cat, is wise, mysterious, and beautiful with her elaborate jeweled collar and Egyptian hieroglyphs. Her tail is like bundles of lotus reeds lashed together with glass tiles. Bethania artist Judith Margerum says her design represents the Forsyth Humane Society, since it protects cats and dogs, and loves them like children.
|
|
|
Myra McGonigle
Canine Alter Ego
Just what does Myra’s dog think it is? Part leopard, giraffe, tiger, zebra, bird and fish…! Myra said that she sometimes wonders what goes on in a pet’s mind, and imagined the humor if a dog daydreamed of being all these different animals. She thinks her pup represents the way the arts community in Winston-Salem really “thinks outside the box.” Myra takes care of animals as well as paints them.

Susan Rumble
The Distinguished Deputy Dog
This brave elder doggie always does the right thing, teaching young pups to respect the law and to never leave home without their collars! He’s got the star to prove his long-time stature, and he’ll always protect his fellow furry friends. Winston-Salem artist Susan Rumble says that this dog is intentionally an older dog, who sometimes have trouble getting adopted, but who have wisdom and love in their hearts. Susan, we so agree!

Laurie Russell

Covered in, of course, spots, Laurie’s dog is adorned with poignant, playful sketches, each with a memory of her dog, Spot… napping, getting treats, hugs, and belly rubs, playing Frisbee, and just in general being part of a pack, the family. Laurie asks that we all love our pets and make them part of our families. Laurie is self-taught, with an intuitive feel for animals who has become a well-known animal artist in Winston-Salem, where she’s lived since 1984. |
|
Lania Smith
Love Hound
Lania’s exciting, electric design depicts a serious message and theme. Specifically, it addresses discrimination, and how to respond to it. Some people are called hurtful names (some included on the sculpture), and this pup encourages them to rise above it with strength and love. It also reminds us of how some dog breeds are picked on, often unfairly. Her rainbow of colors reminds us that the best communities are inclusive of all people. Lania graduated from Mount Tabor, where she was a student of Alice Morley and Mike Spangler.

|
Christina Springston
A Boston gal who moved here four years ago, Christina and her husband love the Triad, and enjoy taking long walks with their two Welsh Corgis, Tess and Danny. Christina’s interests include cooking and interior design, as well as art, and she’s delighted to be participating in Art Unleashed! with two doggie designs.
T-“Rex” - Yikes! Check out this doggie dinosaur’s ridged fins, sharp claws and his base covered with moss, plants and rocks. But this dino-dog looks fun not fierce, and his toothy grin brings smiles, not fear.
Firehouse Follies - Christina says that like our brave fire and rescue teams, the Forsyth Humane Society rescues those who need help and cannot help themselves. A true firehouse Dalmatian, this pup sports a fireman’s helmet and plenty of hose, just in case anyone needs help!

Desiree Stanley-Payne and Cynthia Lynn Pratt
Winston the Wonder Dog
Wow! Winston represents our community’s incredible advancements in the fields of medicine and technology. Their design, these Winston-Salem artists say, refutes the old cliché “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” by visually showing how our community has expanded to become a leader in cutting-edge fields, from anatomy to molecular biology. The DNA formulas represent the excitement of the future and the new paths that will be discovered by research here in the Triad. To learn more about how Winston came to life click here.

Zane Styron
Transcendence of Nature
Kernersville artist Zane Styron said that after adopting a rescued pup, he has a new love and respect for animals. His spectacular design incorporates Hindu mythology, lavish symbolism, and gorgeous patterns…a literal universe of emblematic art. His dog visually demonstrates Zane’s belief that animals are important beings in our world, and far transcend our often limited understanding of them.

Rachel E. Tripp
Beautiful Creations
Rachel, a Winston-Salem artist, loves nature and animals, as her beautiful cat makes very clear. Her kitty is covered with gorgeous flora and fauna, including a sweet squirrel; a cardinal, the state bird; and dogwood, the flower of North Carolina. Decorated from bottom to top, with ponds full of frogs to butterflies and bunnies, and, oh look, the sky looks Carolina blue!
|
 |
|
Michael B. Urbowicz
She’s Like No Other
Winston-Salem artist Mike Urbowicz beautifully makes the point that all animals are unique, and no one is exactly like another. That’s why we love them. Each unique creature, with its own personality, is one of a kind that literally “broke the mold.” This highly detailed dog is, right now, breaking out of her mold for everyone to see.
|
|
Kelly Walsh

Susan H. Weiss

A self-taught artist, Kernersville resident Susan has trained, groomed and shown dogs. Susan now paints animal-themed furniture, and usually works with acrylics and favors bright colors. Susan and her husband have owned and loved many cats, dogs, horses and even a goat, and are now owned by two adopted dogs, a toy poodle and a poodle Yorkie mix. Susan is a returning Art Unleashed! artist (thanks, pal).
